Home Care Ontario Responds to the creation of the Premier's Council-October 4, 2018

Home Care Ontario applauds the creation of the Premier’s Council on Improving Healthcare and Ending Hallway Medicine and congratulates those chosen to work collaboratively to find lasting solutions to transform Ontario’s health care system.

The flu season adds extra pressure to an already strained acute care system. As a first step, the surge funding announced will help ensure our hospitals have the immediate support they need to manage the surge in increased patient volumes for a few months.

Addressing the root causes of overcrowded hospitals and ‘hallway medicine’, however, is complex and rooted in the need for a long term vision, planning and stable funding. Now is the time for real and innovative solutions to build the kind of system that delivers high-quality care today and for decades to come.

Home and community care is a critical part of that system. Numerous studies have shown that Ontarians want to stay at home as long as possible. Ontario needs to find more permanent solutions that include support for a robust home and community care system that is responsive to immediate need. By effectively using home care, pressures in other parts of the system can be reduced.

Home Care Ontario, therefore, welcomes the new Premiers Council and will continue to provide advice and guidance as we go forward to build a sustainable and effective health care system that ensures more patients can be treated where they want - at home.
