Home Care Ontario is a founding member of the Ontario Caregiver Coalition (OCC) and a partner of the Canadian Caregiver Coalition (Carers Canada). Family caregivers are integral to providing care in the home and the Association supports the introduction of measures that will support families as they fulfill caregiving responsibilities.
In Ontario, one in five is a family caregiver, contributing to more than 70 percent of total caregiving needs. The caregiving responsibilities are often intense and lengthy in duration. Success for health care reform will be enhanced if families are provided greater support to maintain their natural and desired caregiving role including access to quality privately purchased care. Without the financial acknowledgement of the fundamental reliance of the home and community care system on the dedication and presence of the family, institutionalization may be the only option for many individuals.
In 2013/2014 Home Care Ontario participated in the Episodic Caregiver Support Initiative. The Summary Report and Executive Summary provide insight into the experiences of individuals living with episodic disability and their caregivers.
